How record labels sign artists in India
Signing is a numbers decision dressed up as a taste decision. Here is what labels and management companies actually look at, in hard numbers, from both a label and an artist-management point of view.

Short answerLabels sign momentum, not the best music. They look at rising monthly listeners, streams growing release over release, high save rates, short-form traction, live demand, and consistent output. The best way to get signed is to grow to where you barely need to be.
How labels actually decide
Labels and artist-management companies are not looking for the best music. They are looking for the lowest-risk investment, an artist already showing momentum they can pour fuel on. Signing is a numbers decision dressed up as a taste decision. Understand the numbers and you understand the game.
The hard numbers they look at
These are ranges, not rules, and they vary by genre and language, but this is roughly what gets attention in India today:
- Monthly listeners: consistent growth matters more than a big flat number. A rising 5,000 to 50,000 monthly listeners with an upward curve beats a stagnant 200,000.
- Streams per release: whether each new song outperforms the last, proof you are building, not fading.
- Save and playlist-add rate: high saves signal real fans, not passive plays. Labels check this because it predicts longevity.
- Social and short-form traction: Reels and YouTube Shorts that travel, and a following that engages (comments and shares), not just a follower count.
- Live demand: can you sell tickets or draw a room? Live pull is one of the strongest signals of a real, transferable fanbase.
- Release consistency: a steady output cadence. Labels want a machine that keeps producing, not one great song.
What they are really buying
Momentum they did not have to create. A label wants to see that you can already build an audience on your own, so their money multiplies something that works, rather than starting from zero. This is the uncomfortable truth: the best way to get signed is to grow to the point where you no longer need to be.
Development vs management here
From a management point of view, the job is to package and present these numbers to labels, brands, and promoters, and to negotiate the deal. From a development point of view, the job is to build those numbers in the first place, the release strategy, the audience, the consistency, so there is a case to make. If your numbers are not there yet, you do not need a manager or a label. You need development.
How to build the numbers
Grow deliberately: a real release plan, consistent output, pitching to reviewers and curators, and understanding what streams actually pay before you count on them (our calculator). If you want a team building this with you, that is the programme.
People also ask
What do record labels look for when signing an artist?
Momentum and low risk: rising monthly listeners, streams that grow release over release, high save rates, short-form traction, live demand, and consistent output. They want proof you can already build an audience on your own.
How many monthly listeners do you need to get signed in India?
There is no fixed number, and a rising 5,000 to 50,000 with clear growth beats a stagnant 200,000. Labels weigh the trend and engagement far more than the raw figure.
How do artist managers get you signed?
A manager packages your numbers and story, presents them to labels, brands, and promoters, and negotiates. But they can only sell momentum that exists, building it in the first place is development, not management.
How do labels find and sign artists?
Labels watch for traction, streams, live draw, social momentum, then approach, or they field demos. They sign artists who already show a rising audience, not raw potential.
Should I sign to a record label?
Sign only if the deal adds more than you could do alone and does not take rights you will regret losing. Many Indian artists do better staying independent and keeping their masters, see becoming an independent artist.
What is a 360 deal, and how do record deals work in India?
A 360 deal gives the label a cut of not just recordings but touring, merch, and other income. Standard deals advance money against future royalties; read exactly what rights and revenue streams you are signing away before agreeing.
How do I approach a record label or submit a demo in India?
Do not cold-blast. Build traction first, then approach through a warm intro or a specific A&R contact with a short, strong link and your numbers. A tight demo plus proof of an audience beats a long email.
Want a team behind your release?
For a few artists at a time: work directly with Siby and Karishma, plus a network of specialists for release strategy, PR, social, video, design, legal and IPRS. One month to start, no commitment beyond that, and no cut of your music.
