The short version
Artist management runs the business of your career day to day: deals, bookings, schedules, negotiations, the people around you. A manager is your operator and represents you in rooms. Artist development is the work of building the career itself, the sound, identity, release strategy, audience, and the plan, so there is a career worth managing. You can have one without the other, and most independent artists in India need development long before they need a manager.
What an artist manager actually does
- Represents you and negotiates on your behalf, labels, brands, promoters, publishers.
- Runs the day to day: calendars, contracts, coordinating your team, chasing payments.
- Opens doors through relationships, and takes a cut (commonly 15 to 20 percent) of what you earn.
A manager is worth it once there is real income and enough moving parts that you cannot handle them and make music too. Sign one too early and you are paying a percentage of very little for work you could still do yourself.
What artist development actually does
- Sharpens the fundamentals: your sound, your story, your visual identity, your positioning.
- Builds the machine: a release strategy, an audience-building plan, the tools and know-how to run it.
- Brings specialists in for the pieces you cannot do alone, PR, marketing, video, design, legal, IPRS, without taking ownership of your music.
Which one do you need?
Be honest about your stage. If you are still finding your sound, releasing inconsistently, or unsure how to get heard or paid, that is a development gap, and a manager cannot fix it for you. If you already have momentum, income, and more opportunities than you can handle alone, that is when management earns its cut. Most artists we meet across India need development first: a real plan and a team behind the release, not someone to take 20 percent of a career that is not built yet.
