What being an independent artist really means
Independent means you own your career and your rights. Nobody else decides your music or takes your masters. It also means you carry the business, or build a team around you. The upside: full control and you keep what you earn. The trade: you have to learn the parts a label would otherwise handle. This guide maps them.
Step 1: Release your first music (no label needed)
Finish and master a song, prepare square artwork and clean metadata, and release it through a distributor. There's no gatekeeper, any artist can get onto Spotify, Apple Music, JioSaavn and YouTube Music. Full steps in how to release a song in India, and distributor choice in the best music distributor for India.
Step 2: Set up your foundation (rights and profiles)
- Get your ISRC (usually free via your distributor), it tracks your recording.
- Register your composition with IPRS so you collect publishing royalties: copyright and IPRS in India.
- Claim Spotify for Artists and Apple Music for Artists, so releases land on a real, verified profile.
- Keep 100% of your rights. A distributor takes a fee or a cut, never ownership.
Step 3: Get heard
Releasing isn't promoting. Pitch playlists and press before each release using our reviewer database, use short video as your discovery engine, and drive listeners to save and follow. See how to promote your music.
Step 4: Build the career, not just the release
One song rarely changes anything. Release on a rhythm so each builds on the last, grow an audience you own, and think in campaigns, not one-offs. Money for independent artists comes from live shows, sync and real fans more than streaming, see making money as an independent artist. That long game is the whole point of the programme.
