Artist branding and positioning in India: how to build a brand as an independent musician

Your brand is not a logo. It is what people recognise and remember about you. Here is how to build a clear artist identity and positioning that actually pulls listeners in.

By Siby John, thirteen years inside the platforms that decide which music gets seen: Marketing Manager at YouTube India from 2022 to 2025, working with 400+ artists and labels, now Senior Creator Manager at LinkedIn. Reviewed 31 August 2026.
Short answer

Artist branding is positioning: what you sound like, who it is for, and what you stand for, made consistent across everything you release. A muddy identity markets terribly; a clear one gives listeners a reason to follow and remember you. Start with positioning, then let your visuals, copy, and content flow from it, not the other way around.

What artist branding really means

Branding is not your logo, your colours, or your cover art. Those are expressions of it. Your brand is the clear answer to a simple question: when someone hears your music or sees your page, what do they understand and remember about you? For an independent artist, a strong brand is the difference between being background noise and being someone worth following.

Positioning is the foundation

Before any visuals, get your positioning right: what you sound like, who it is for, and what makes you you. "Honest Hindi indie for late-night drives" is positioning; "singer-songwriter" is not. A sharp position gives listeners a reason to care and gives you a filter for every creative decision. This is the single most common thing missing when an artist says their music is not landing.

Building your visual and verbal identity

Once positioning is clear, everything else flows from it: your artist name treatment and cover art, your bio and captions, the way you talk to listeners, the world your visuals live in. Consistency is what makes it stick, the same identity across Spotify, Instagram, and your releases so people recognise you instantly. See how this feeds your wider music marketing.

How branding turns listeners into followers

Reach without a brand leaks: people hear the song, like it, and forget you. A clear brand gives a first-time listener a reason to follow and come back, which is how you turn plays into an audience. See how to get more listeners and building a fanbase.
