Music marketing for independent artists in India

Promotion is pushing a release. Marketing is building something people come back to. Here's how to market yourself as an independent Indian artist.

By Siby John, thirteen years inside the platforms that decide which music gets seen: Marketing Manager at YouTube India from 2022 to 2025, working with 400+ artists and labels, now Senior Creator Manager at LinkedIn. Reviewed 31 August 2026.
Short answer

Music marketing is not posting more; it's building a clear identity people recognise and an audience you own. Get your positioning right (what you sound like and stand for), pick one or two channels and be consistent, and always drive people to something you control, an email list or a follow, not just a stream. A small, engaged audience that shows up beats a big passive one.

Marketing vs promotion

Promotion is the campaign around one song (covered in how to promote your music). Marketing is the ongoing work of building a brand and an audience so every release starts from a warmer place. If promotion is the sprint, marketing is the training.

Get your positioning right first

Before tactics, clarity: what do you sound like, who is it for, and what makes you you? A muddy identity markets terribly. A clear one, "honest Hindi indie for late-night drives", gives listeners a reason to follow and gives you a filter for every post. This is the foundation of building a music brand in India.

The channels that matter (pick one or two)

Better to be consistent on two channels than sporadic on five.

Own your audience, don't rent it

Followers are borrowed; the platform can throttle or lose them. An email list, a WhatsApp broadcast, a direct-to-fan link, that's yours. Use social to drive people to something you control, so a release always has a warm audience to land on. This is the difference between building a career and starting from zero each time.

A simple marketing system

You don't need a big plan. Consistency beats intensity: show up on your two channels with a clear identity, turn passive listeners into followers, turn followers into a list you own, and treat every release as a chance to deepen that, not just chase strangers. If you want this built with you, that's the programme.
