How to build a fanbase as an independent musician in India

You do not need to go viral to build a career. You need a real relationship with enough people. Here is how to build it.

By Siby John, thirteen years inside the platforms that decide which music gets seen: Marketing Manager at YouTube India from 2022 to 2025, working with 400+ artists and labels, now Senior Creator Manager at LinkedIn. Reviewed 1 August 2026.
Short answer

You do not need to go viral. A modest number of committed fans who buy everything you make can sustain a career, which fits independent India well. Build depth: give casual listeners a clear reason and a way to go deeper, a mailing list, a community, shows, merch, and reward the ones who show up.

The 1000 true fans idea

The writer Kevin Kelly argued that an artist does not need millions of listeners, only a modest number of true fans who buy everything you make and bring others along. For independent artists in India, where mass scale is hard and streaming pays little, this is the more realistic and durable path. You can read the original essay via our reading list.

Reach versus depth

Reach is how many people hear you once; depth is how many come back and support you. A viral moment that converts to nobody is worth less than a thousand people who show up for every release. Super fans are made by repeated, personal contact, not by a single big number.

Own your audience

The most valuable audience is the one no platform can take from you. A mailing list reaches every subscriber directly, unlike a social feed that an algorithm controls. Build it from day one: offer early tracks, a personal note, or presale access, and collect emails at every show and release.

Turn listeners into fans

Think of it as a funnel: someone discovers you, follows you, joins your list, enters your community, and eventually buys. Give people a reason and an easy way to take each step, and reward the ones who do with access, gratitude, and things worth having. See how independent artists make money for where that support turns into income.

Go where your fans gather

A niche is an advantage when you serve it well. Find the specific communities, scenes, cities, and collaborators where listeners for your sound already gather, rather than broadcasting to everyone. Live shows, however small, build the deepest fans fastest.

The takeaway

Trade the chase for virality for the patient work of depth: own your audience, convert listeners to fans, and serve a niche. The identity and audience chapters of the Playbook go deeper, and building this is a core part of the programme.
