Who talent buyers are, how they think, and how to build relationships with them in India's live music market.
What Is a Talent Buyer?
A talent buyer is the person (or team) who decides which artists perform at a venue or festival. They sit on the other side of the table from booking agents and artist managers. They are responsible for:
- Curating the venue or festival's musical identity
- Booking artists within budget
- Ensuring shows are financially viable (enough ticket buyers to justify the artist's fee)
- Maintaining relationships with the booking agents, managers, and artists who make their programming work
In India, the same person often holds the titles of "talent buyer", "booker", "programming director", or "events manager" simultaneously — the roles overlap significantly at smaller venues.
The Talent Buyer's Decision-making Framework
Before a talent buyer confirms an artist, they are typically evaluating:
1. AUDIENCE FIT: Does this artist's fanbase match the audience that comes to this venue? A metal band at a jazz club is a mismatch, regardless of how strong the draw.
2. FINANCIAL VIABILITY: Can ticket revenue (or sponsor revenue, at branded events) cover the artist's fee plus venue costs, with enough margin to make the show worth the effort?
3. DRAW IN THIS SPECIFIC MARKET: An artist with 50,000 Spotify followers is not automatically a strong draw in Bengaluru if 80% of their listeners are in Mumbai. Talent buyers look at city-level streaming data and, ideally, past show attendance in their market.
4. PROFESSIONALISM: Is this artist easy to work with? Do they send stage plots and tech riders? Do they arrive on time? References from other venues matter.
5. SOCIAL MEDIA RELEVANCE: Particularly for younger audiences, an artist's Instagram following in the city, combined with recent content engagement (not just follower count), influences booking decisions for smaller shows.
Key Talent Buyers in India's Indie Circuit
Festivals
- Parizad D / OML Team: NH7 Weekender programming. OML is the most important live music company for indie artists in India.
- Magnetic Fields: Boutique festival in Alsisar Mahal, Rajasthan. Small, curated lineup. Approach via their open submissions or through established agents.
- Ziro Festival of Music: Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh. Focus on indie, folk, and roots music. Submit via open call (typically announced April–May annually).
- Boxout Weekender: Electronic and club music. Contact through their management team.
Venues
- Humming Tree (Bengaluru): Programming decisions made by the founders/management team. Strong preference for artists with a documented Bengaluru following.
- Antisocial (OML venues, multiple cities): Booked through OML's events team.
- High Spirits Pune: Owner-operated; direct contact with the management team is most effective.
- Hard Rock Cafe (multiple cities): Run through a central events/booking team. More commercially oriented; tribute bands and pop/rock acts tend to do well here.
Corporate / Brand Events
The most lucrative segment for many Indian artists. Brands like Bacardi NH7 Weekender, Kingfisher Great Indian Rock, Bira 91, Red Bull India, boAt, and CRED run large-scale events where talent buyers are typically event agencies or in-house brand managers. Key distinction: corporate talent buyers care about brand fit and professionalism first, audience size second.
How to Get on a Talent Buyer's Radar
1. PLAY GREAT SHOWS IN THEIR CITY: Talent buyers at good venues watch what is happening on their local circuit. If you sell out a smaller venue in their city, the next-tier venue notices.
2. GET COVERED BY LOCAL MEDIA: A Wild City or Homegrown feature, a Rolling Stone India mention, or a strong Scroll.in review circulates in the music industry quickly. Talent buyers read this media.
3. GET INTRODUCED BY SOMEONE THEY TRUST: An introduction from an artist they already book, an industry figure, or a mutual contact is the fastest path to a booking conversation.
4. SUBMIT TO FESTIVAL OPEN CALLS: Many Indian festivals (Ziro, Magnetic Fields, smaller boutique events) accept artist submissions. Submit professionally and on time.
5. SHOW UP AT INDUSTRY EVENTS: Ones like the Mood Indigo industry day (IIT Bombay), NH7 Weekender industry sessions, or independent music conferences give you face time with talent buyers.
How Talent Buyers Structure Deals
VENUE DEALS (Club / Bar)
- Flat guarantee: They pay you regardless of attendance. Risk sits with the venue.
- Door deal: You take a percentage of ticket revenue. Risk sits with you.
- Versus deal: Higher of (guarantee) or (% of door). Most equitable for both parties.
Festival Deals
- Usually a flat fee plus travel and accommodation (or a fixed production allowance).
- Fees range widely: an emerging artist at a boutique festival might receive INR 15,000–50,000 + travel; a mid-tier act at NH7 Weekender might earn INR 1,00,000–5,00,000+ per stage.
- Production riders (PA, backline, stage size) are negotiated separately.
Corporate Events
- Fees are significantly higher: INR 1,00,000–20,00,000+ depending on artist profile and event budget.
- GST will be charged on top (18% on service fees if GST-registered).
- TDS deduction at 2% is standard for companies booking individual artists under Section 194C.
- Payment is often slower (30–60 day payment terms are common for corporates). Factor this into cash flow planning.
Building Long-term Relationships with Talent Buyers
- Follow through on every commitment. Arrive on time. Send your tech rider. Respect the curfew.
- Send thank-you messages after shows. Not generic gratitude — specific observations about what worked.
- Share show photos and videos with them for their own use. This makes their marketing job easier.
- Give them early notice of your next release or tour. Talent buyers plan 2–6 months in advance.
- When they reach out, respond promptly. Slow responses to show inquiries cost bookings.
