Radio Formats 101 Guide (India)

A free, practical guide for independent Indian artists. Part of the Indie Music India toolkit.

Understanding the different radio formats in India and how your music fits into each.

What Is a Radio Format?

A radio format is the programming identity of a station — it defines what music the station plays, what demographic it targets, and how its shows are structured. Understanding formats is the first step to knowing which stations to target and how to position your pitch.

Major Radio Formats in India

1. Bollywood / Hindi Contemporary Hit Radio (Chr)

The dominant format in India by sheer number of stations and listener numbers.

2. Hindi Retro / Golden Era

3. ENGLISH CONTEMPORARY (Adult Contemporary / Top 40)

4. Youth / Alternative

5. Regional Language Format

6. All India Radio (Air)

AIR operates multiple formats:

How Radio Programming Decisions Are Made in India

Music Director Rotation

At each station (or city-level station), a Music Director (MD) or Head of Music decides which tracks enter the playlist and how frequently they are rotated.

Audience Research

Large stations use research panels and digital feedback to measure which songs their specific city audience likes. Songs that test well stay in rotation longer.

Label Relationships

Major labels have dedicated label managers who maintain ongoing relationships with station music directors. This is why major label releases almost automatically receive consideration — there is a pre-existing relationship. Independent artists must substitute relationship-building and targeted outreach for this structural advantage.

Which Format Is Right for your Music?

Air Artiste Registration

All India Radio requires artists to register as an "auditioned artiste" before they can receive performance fees for broadcast on AIR. This is separate from commercial FM.

Grade A: Established artists — higher fee Grade B: Mid-level artists — standard fee Grade C: New, emerging artists

Registration process: Contact your nearest AIR station's Audition Committee. Bring recordings and be prepared to perform live in an audition. Grade is assigned by the committee.

AIR fees for broadcast use (indicative, per broadcast): Grade A: INR 15,000+ Grade B: INR 5,000–15,000 Grade C: INR 2,000–5,000

Digital Radio and Streaming Radio in India

Spotify Radio / Apple Music Radio: Generated automatically by DSP algorithms; not programmable directly. Amazon Music Stations: Similar algorithmic approach. Gaana Radio / JioSaavn Radio: Streaming radio features within the apps; artists can claim profiles to improve algorithmic placement. Online radio stations (non-broadcast): A growing number of online-only stations and DJ/curation streams on platforms like Mixcloud are relevant for electronic, ambient, and alternative artists.
