Media 101 Guide (India)

A free, practical guide for independent Indian artists. Part of the Indie Music India toolkit.

Understanding India's music media landscape — who covers independent music, how to approach them, and how to build lasting press relationships.

India's Music Media Landscape

India's music press is smaller than its Western counterparts but growing rapidly. The most influential outlets for independent artists sit at the intersection of music curation, cultural commentary, and digital media.

TIER 1: SPECIALIST MUSIC MEDIA (Highest credibility for indie music)

WILD CITY (wildcity.co) India's most respected digital music publication. Focuses exclusively on independent, electronic, and alternative music from India and the subcontinent. What they cover: New releases (reviews, features), artist profiles, label and scene spotlights, playlists, event coverage. Tone: Informed, discerning, supportive of emerging artists with genuine artistic vision. Pitching: Email with subject line and direct streaming link. Personal relationship with editors valued. They receive many pitches — stand out with specific, thoughtful context. Instagram: @wildcitymedia (110K+ followers) Why it matters: A Wild City feature is widely shared within the Indian indie scene and reaches exactly the audience independent artists want.

HOMEGROWN (homegrown.co.in) India's leading youth culture publication. Covers music, art, culture, fashion, and social issues. What they cover: Artist profiles, editorial features, playlists, live show coverage, social trend analysis. Tone: Optimistic, millennial/Gen-Z, enthusiast. Writes about culture, not just music. Pitching: Contact form on website + Instagram DM. Editors are generally accessible. Why it matters: Homegrown has a large Instagram following (300K+) and is the entry point for many non-music readers discovering indie artists.

ROLLING STONE INDIA (rollingstoneindia.com) The Indian edition of the global brand. Mix of international coverage and Indian artist features. What they cover: Major releases, artist interviews, live reports, industry analysis, some indie features. Tone: More mainstream than Wild City. Better suited to artists with an established profile. Pitching: Via publicist is more effective than cold outreach. Their editorial team responds better to warm introductions. Why it matters: The RS brand carries global weight and some RS India features are syndicated or referenced internationally.

Tier 2: National Digital and Print Media

The Hindu

India's most respected English-language daily. Arts and culture section covers music. What they cover: Primarily classical, folk, and well-established artists in the print edition. Online section is broader. Pitching: Via publicist recommended. Long-lead times. Why it matters: Credibility with older, educated readership; useful for artists crossing over from indie to mainstream.

Scroll.in

High-quality digital news and culture publication. Strong independent readership. What they cover: Artist profiles, cultural essays, industry analysis. Tends to focus on socially relevant music stories. Pitching: Email to arts/culture desk. Pitches with a genuine cultural angle perform better than pure promotional pitches.

LIVE MINT (Lounge section) Business-first publication with a weekend culture magazine. Covers music with an upscale audience focus. Why it matters: Relevant for corporate booking pitches and brand partnerships — Lounge readership overlaps with brand decision-makers.

Tier 3: City Press and Bloggers

City-specific publications (Time Out Mumbai/Delhi/Bengaluru, The Quint, Deccan Herald arts) and local bloggers who cover gigs and shows. Often more accessible for new artists and valuable for local market awareness.

How Music Media Works in India

EDITORIAL INDEPENDENCE: Unlike radio, India's music press is genuinely editorially independent. Advertising does not buy reviews. You cannot pay for coverage in Wild City or Homegrown — they choose what to cover based on their editorial judgment.

RELATIONSHIP MATTERS: Editors and writers at Indian music outlets attend the same gigs and festivals as artists. Showing up at Humming Tree, Antisocial, and festival shows means being in the same space as the people who write about music. These relationships are built over time, not via email.

REVIEW TIMELINES: Online outlets (Wild City, Homegrown) can typically publish within 1–2 weeks of receiving a release. Print (Rolling Stone India print edition) requires 6–8 weeks lead time. Plan your embargo dates accordingly.

Types of Media Coverage

REVIEW: A critical assessment of a new release. The most common and most valuable type. A Wild City review of a strong release can drive significant streams and credibility.

FEATURE / PROFILE: An in-depth article about the artist, their background, and their work. Usually requires more existing profile than a review — harder to secure for new artists.

INTERVIEW: Q&A format. More accessible for mid-career artists; often tied to a specific release or project.

PLAYLIST FEATURE: Your song included in an editorial playlist (e.g., "10 Songs to Start Your Week"). Drives streams directly and signals curatorial approval.

LIVE REVIEW / GIG COVERAGE: A publication sending a writer to review your show. Usually for artists playing significant venues or festivals.

PREMIERE: A publication features your song before it is released to the public. Valuable for pre-release momentum — negotiate embargo lift date carefully.
