India Artist Management Toolkit — Money Kit
Grants are non-dilutive funding — you do not give up rights, royalties, or equity. Most Indian indie artists are unaware of what is available. This guide covers every credible grant, fellowship, residency, and scheme an independent musician based in India can apply for.
How to Use This Guide
1. Read through every category and mark which ones you are eligible for. 2. Note the application windows — most open once a year. 3. Prepare your artist portfolio (bio, recordings, press, project proposal) so you can apply quickly when windows open. 4. Apply to multiple schemes simultaneously — there is no conflict between receiving grants from different bodies. 5. Track applications in the Application Tracker at the end of this document.
1. Government of India — Central Schemes
Sangeet Natak Akademi (Sna)
Website: sangeetnatak.gov.in India's national academy of music, dance, and drama, under the Ministry of Culture.
SNA Fellowships (Akademi Ratna / Akademi Puraskar):
- For outstanding contribution to Indian performing arts — competitive, prestigious
- Not application-based; nominations accepted from the field
SNA Financial Assistance Scheme:
- Grants to cultural organisations and individuals for specific projects
- Covers workshops, recordings, performances, documentation
- Amounts: typically ₹1–5 lakh per project
- Apply via: sangeetnatak.gov.in/schemes
SNA Cultural Troupes Scheme:
- Supports touring and cultural exchange programmes
- Relevant for artists wanting to perform in underserved regions or internationally
Iccr — Indian Council for Cultural Relations

Artist Grants (Cultural Exchange):
- Funds Indian artists to participate in international cultural programmes
- Apply when invited by a foreign institution with ICCR backing
- Covers travel, accommodation, performance fees
Empanelment for International Tours:
- Get onto the ICCR empanelled artist list to be considered for state-sponsored international tours

MINISTRY OF CULTURE — ZONAL CULTURAL CENTRES (ZCCs)
Seven ZCCs across India, each running grant and development schemes for regional artists.
- North Zone Cultural Centre (Patiala)
- West Zone Cultural Centre (Udaipur)
- South Zone Cultural Centre (Thanjavur)
- East Zone Cultural Centre (Kolkata)
- North East Zone Cultural Centre (Dimapur)
- North Central Cultural Centre (Prayagraj)
- South Central Cultural Centre (Nagpur)
Each ZCC runs its own annual schemes. Check your regional ZCC website for current calls.
Scheme for Young Artists (Sya)
- Ministry of Culture scheme supporting young performing artists
- Monthly stipend for 2 years while pursuing advanced training
- Age limit: typically 18–30
- Apply via: Ministry of Culture portal (indiaculture.nic.in)
2. State Government Schemes
Most state governments run their own arts and culture departments with annual grants. Key ones:
Maharashtra: Maharashtra Rajya Sahitya ani Sanskriti Mandal — grants for performing arts projects Karnataka: Department of Kannada and Culture — Rajyotsava awards, project grants Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu Arasu Nataka Mandram — performance and creation grants Delhi: Delhi Arts Commission — project grants, residencies for Delhi-based artists Kerala: Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi — classical and folk music focus West Bengal: Paschim Banga Sangeet Akademi
