Everything an independent Indian artist needs to know about booking agents — what they do, how the Indian market works, when you need one, and how to approach them.
What Is a Booking Agent?
A booking agent's primary job is to secure live performance opportunities for artists — shows, tours, festival slots, and corporate events. They work the phones and inboxes so the artist can focus on making music.
A booking agent is NOT:
- A personal manager (who oversees your career broadly)
- A publicist (who handles press and media)
- A label (who funds and distributes recordings)
A booking agent IS:
- A negotiator who knows what your draw is worth in different markets
- A relationship holder with promoters, venues, and festival bookers
- A deal-maker who structures contracts and collects advances
- Your live revenue pipeline
How Booking Agents Work in India
India's booking agency sector is significantly smaller than the US or UK. Most established booking agents in India operate as individual agents or small boutique agencies rather than large firms. Many are also artist managers who have expanded into booking.
The market is relationship-driven. Agents with existing relationships at NH7 Weekender (OML), Magnetic Fields, Ziro Festival, and key venue clusters (Mumbai/Delhi/Bengaluru/Pune) are the most valuable.
Key players in the Indian booking space (2026, indicative — always verify current rosters):
- OML (Only Much Louder): India's largest live music company. Produces NH7 Weekender. Books international and domestic artists.
- BookMyShow Live: Major ticketing and event production company; also books artists for events.
- Krunk: Primarily focused on electronic music; strong club and festival circuit connections.
- VH1 Supersonic: Festival bookers under Viacom18.
- Independent agents and boutique agencies: Many work informally; identifying them requires research and network connections.
What Booking Agents Charge
Standard commission: 10–15% of gross performance fees (before expenses, before GST, before TDS).
This means:
- If your show fee is INR 1,00,000, the agent earns INR 10,000–15,000.
- The artist nets INR 85,000–90,000 before any other deductions (TDS, GST if applicable).
Some agents also charge a monthly retainer (especially in artist management hybrid arrangements). Clarify upfront whether the commission covers all shows or just shows they directly book.
When Do you Need a Booking Agent?
You likely do NOT need a booking agent yet if:
- You are just starting out and have fewer than 5 shows under your belt
- Your local draw is fewer than 50–100 people consistently
- You have not yet established a presence in your home city
You probably DO need a booking agent if:
- You are consistently selling out or near-selling out your home city venue
- You are getting inbound interest from venues or promoters in other cities
- You want to tour multiple cities and do not have the time or relationships to book it yourself
- You are targeting major festivals (NH7 Weekender, Magnetic Fields) and need an inside track
- Your time is better spent writing and recording than sending 50 venue emails per week
How to Approach a Booking Agent in India
Step 1: Research before you reach out. Know who the agent represents. If they book electronic music acts and you are a folk artist, you are not a fit. Look at festival lineups, venue booking emails, and social media to identify who is booking the artists in your genre.
Step 2: Build your artist package. An agent needs to see:
- Streaming numbers (Spotify, JioSaavn, YouTube): minimum viable threshold varies, but 10,000+ monthly Spotify listeners in India is a start.
- Live video: A good quality recording of a recent performance (not a studio setup).
- Past show history: Where you've played, attendance if known, any support slots for bigger acts.
- Social proof: Reviews from Wild City, Homegrown, or other credible Indian music media carry weight.
Step 3: Get a warm introduction. Cold emails to booking agents in India have a low conversion rate. A warm introduction from an artist they already represent, a mutual contact in the industry, or a festival organiser they trust dramatically improves your chances.
Step 4: Send a brief, specific email. Do not attach a 10-page PDF or send a 500-word email. Two short paragraphs, a link to your EPK, and a specific ask ("I'm looking for representation for a 5-city tour in Q4 2026") is far more effective.
Questions to Ask a Potential Booking Agent
Before signing with a booking agent, ask: 1. Who else do you currently represent and in what genres? 2. What venues and festivals do you have active relationships with? 3. What is your commission structure? 4. Do you charge any upfront fees, retainers, or expenses? (Reputable agents work on commission only.) 5. How many shows do you expect to book in the first 6 months? 6. How will you approach building my profile in cities where I haven't played? 7. What is the exclusivity arrangement — regional, national, international? 8. What is the notice period if either party wants to end the agreement?
Booking Agent Agreement — Key Points
Always sign a written agreement before proceeding. Key terms to clarify:
- Territory (India only? Asia? Worldwide?)
- Exclusivity (can you book your own shows directly? Can other agents book you in specific markets?)
- Commission rate and what it applies to (gross fees, net fees?)
- Payment flow: does the promoter pay the agent who pays you, or do they pay you directly?
- Duration and termination clause
- What happens to bookings in progress if the relationship ends?
LEGAL NOTE: Have an entertainment lawyer or experienced music industry CA review any booking agreement before signing. There is no standard contract in India — terms vary widely.
