Why there is no fixed per-stream rate
Spotify does not pay a set amount per play. According to Spotify’s own Loud & Clear data, it takes the revenue it earns in a market, pools it, and pays each rights holder a share based on that track's percentage of total streams. This is called a stream-share or pro-rata model. Because the size of the pool and the total number of streams both change every month, the effective per-stream rate is never a constant, it is simply the money divided by the plays.
That is why two artists with the same stream count can be paid differently: what matters is where those streams came from and what Spotify earned there.
Why India payouts are lower
Payouts track the revenue a platform makes per listener. In India, subscription prices and advertising rates are much lower than in Western markets, so the revenue pool shared across streams from India is smaller. It is not a penalty aimed at Indian artists, it reflects what the market pays. The practical result is that a stream from a paid listener in the US or UK is worth many times more than a stream from India.
A rough way to estimate your earnings in rupees
Any rupee figure is an estimate, but you can sketch one: multiply your India streams by an approximate per-stream range of a small fraction of a rupee, then subtract your distributor's cut. For example, a track with 100,000 streams that are mostly from India might return a few thousand rupees, not a few lakh. Streams from higher-revenue countries lift that average considerably. The honest takeaway
Streaming is a discovery layer, not a salary. Independent income in India is stacked across live shows, sync and licensing, merch, YouTube, and direct fan support, with streaming feeding the top of that funnel. If your streaming income feels small, that is normal, the fix is to build the other layers around it, not to chase the per-stream number.
